Poetry and Art

The Poetry of Untold

My eyes always watered at this very thought,

But I was determined this time, and left.

But, dear!

I wished to see you for the last time,

And like my many other wishes,

It wasn’t fulfilled.

Turning the doorknob,

Your face came to my mind,

With its usual careless smile.

But, dear!

The things I decided will snatch your smile,

And there’s no way to undo what’s done.

You’ll come to my house with a feeling that you’ll be forgiven,

‘Cause you’ll think erroneously that you know me the best

And will merely expect a trifle argument

Which will be settled with an easy move.

But, dear!

This time, you’ll get nothing you expect,

‘Cause you’ll find yourself in my house

Without me.

And you’ll be looking for me,

Here and there, repenting for being so late –

But, dear!

Repentance is meant for those who never felt the need to express their love.

It’s meant for people like you.

I wasn’t happy with the decision,

But you remained indifferent for so long,

Forgetting every essential truths.

Now the time has come for you to realise the pain of being forgotten,

And a bonus of being unforgiven.

But, dear!

I choose to leave my dearest possession in charge of you.

My reading room, my bookshelf,

With the hope that you’ll need them,

To remember me.

Read them, if you still wish to know an unimportant person like me.

And after everything has got its end,

Let’s start from the beginning.

Let’s go back.

As if we never met,

And will never meet ever.

Never thought I would publish poetry on this blog. But then I thought, why not? I had written a lot of poems since a long time, but only one or two of them were publicized. One big reason was that, I wasn’t, and am still not confident about the worth of my writings. In general blog posts, I share information or reviews, that made me think harder whether to publish this poem or to let it be lost inside the pages of my diaries.

I know this poem is not exceptionally good, still if you liked the poem, kindly let me know your views on it through the comments. That would give me a boost!

  2. The point here is not about the merit of the turning doorknob, because this is a raw, bleeding account of a broken relationship, the shards of broken glass still underfoot. Don’t get fooled readers, this is not a poetic fantasy, this is a real pain. As it is such a public display, perhaps it is hoped that the treacherous visitor will see it and get the message
    Than you.

    1. Thank you so much for your beautiful comment, Joanna. Actually, I didn’t address it to someone, but I tried to portray the real pain you talked about. I have seen many great Indian and international authors write from novel perspectives, Bankim chandra Chattopadhyay has written such great novels from women’s perspective, Ashapurna Devi, Suchitra Bhattacharya has written great novels from men’s perspective,Sukumar Ray and Satyajit Ray has written great stories from children’s perspective. I know it sounds far-fetched, but I just tried to write this short poem from the perspective of a heartbroken person. I thought of being a creator without being a consumer of heartbreak.
I really appreciate your comment and can’t express thank you in words. Best regards, Esdi.

      1. You are a gifted person and I am relieved that it is your imagination at play here. There are many people writing poetry and some are exceptionally talented, but many just write about what they feel. I am glad that you are not one of them. To be a poet you need inspiration from a different realm.

      2. Thank you so much again. Actually, I don’t have enough experience to restrict myself to write about whatever I personally felt, so, I read books and poetry, and observe people around me to draw inspiration for writing. Your comment made me more confident in my writing. Thank you very much. Esdi.

  3. This poetry gives you the reason that sometimes you don’t always have to experience the truth and then write about it. Imaginations can take you into a different realm where you can experience all about the feelings you want to experience. The portray of the pain is so real, that nobody can think that this is all your imagination. I must say you are a great imaginer. Try posting a lot of posts which you have already written in the pages of your diary. Don’t hesitate, best wishes for your endeavours. 💜💗

  4. A very nice job, I thought, especially for someone who doesn’t write much poetry. Keep putting yourself out there, even if you’re unsure. It’s the only way we get better at our craft. I have written many short stories but only a few poems; it’s not that easy, as you know, but nothing worthwhile is. Don’t give up!

  5. ‘…lost inside the pages of my diaries…’ That’s poetry right there. Blogging is great- you get positive feedback, your readers get inspired, and often you get inspired from their comments! It comes full circle.
I absolutely love writing poetry. I count syllables and play with synonyms, rhymes and near rhymes… I love finding that perfect word to illustrate my point.
    Good job, keep it up!

  6. Fools need to learn, even If they will never learn it. What a fool it must have been, not to realize the lost of your Love. Very Well written, very worth to remember. Sad to realize that this did not Prevent me to make the same mistakes. Payed the highest price Life can ask for.

  7. This is personal, this poem of yours. The beauty of it is that everyone who enjoys it will have their own meaning for your words. Often I tell bloggers with whom I routinely exchange kudos and barbs that poetry is not for me. Not for me to write. Poetry, I explain, is exceptionally difficult, requires special skills. Like flash fiction, poetry is very demanding, cruel sometimes, how it makes you struggle to say something significant, humorous or serious, with the special constraints it insists upon. Whatever form you chose. Poetry as a form is a teacher, urging you to find new words to express thoughts. It is not so very important that you be perfect, but that you learn from each experience. And along the way enjoy your struggle. By all means, share what you write! And do so proudly. Like you have done here.

    1. Thank you so much for your advice. No doubt poetry is difficult, and I don’t know how much of it I’ve done correctly. But I’ve decided to share more poems on this blog.
